Osiyo (Cherokee hello), Kwe (Mohawk), hola (Spanish), kaixo (Basque), Dia Dhuit (Gaelic) & hello my friends,

A little about me: Five dogs, four children, three hamsters, two rabbits, and one jar always full of tadpoles was the regular scene while growing up in Jupiter Farms, FL. Living in a rural area had its fair share of perks, beautiful scenery, peace and quiet, a connection with the land, and an appreciation for resources that were difficult to come by. However, access to resources such as health care can be extremely limited no matter how much they are valued. When scarcity ensues, there is greater stress on the community and resultant changes to cultural and traditional roles. This idea and my background spurred my interest in the many indigenous nations often forgotten due to their rural nature and colonial transformation. My specific interest lies in the health and role of Native American women and how this status has changed with the introduction of western medicine. I started my research on this topic while as an undergraduate at Stanford University (Class of 2014), which I hope to display pieces of in this blog.

If you would like to contact me directly, please email me at mcbee@alumni.stanford.edu!

Wado (Cherokee Thank you),
